last class: everything is a fabrication and so are we- can we all get along now?

- Jaques derrida
on communication barriers and fractures
-language is a transparent medium, where we automatically have the mental freedom to draw personal connections, thus not an efficient medium at all for communication between people (because there are so many different opinions, stances and views on everything which is attempted to be communicated).
-Deconstruction of visual communication down to motives and ethics.
-Exploring post structuralism and the language games of derrida’s grammatology
-things I have learned in my life
-Ed Fella
father of grunge typography
whatever way technology is taking things, this is counter that
unsystemized reaction
-culture jam
reality vs. identity
-Post modern graphic design, layering, fracture, transparencies, disunity.

What I took from today’s lecture and viewings is that because graphic designers are those who bridge communication barriers, we are also the ones who must understand the content. We must understand the world around us, and keep an open mind. We need to consider all opinions, but also be opinionated… we are the ones who search around and look in all corners for all things good tasteful and ugly and disgusting, no matter the content, our social responsiblility one could say is to put either new meaning to old imagery, bring back old associations with new imagery. Graphic design also consists of the new with the new, the old with the old, and all sorts of combinations within. It is our responsibility to know and understand this content, and bring it forward, presenting it in a way in which everyone can process it and consider further and deeper understanding, in hopes to further either their knowledge or to better their contribution and role in the global community.
